Telling someone you are in debt can feel like a weight off your shoulders – but it can also be difficult to know how to tell your partner, family or friends. Here are four tips to make the conversation go as smoothly as possible.
1. Debt can be uncomfortable, but it doesn't have to be a taboo topic! If you're planning on opening up about debt to your family, then just do it. First consider how your debt came about and whether this debt actually has anything to do with the people who care most about you in this world.
2. Next prepare for all possible reactions - some will understand why debt is important while others may not; some might get angry at their loved one's foolishness while others might blame themselves for lending money in the first place (again keep it real); some might become defensive while others encourage action...
3. Prepare what you are going to say and how much debt there was - this would depend on why you were opening up about debt to family members but honesty always works best in my mind because then they know that you aren't hiding anything....
4. Lets talk honestly about debt as though its a problem we own together, nobody wants debt or needs debt, it's not like credit card owners will be forced into poverty if the banks fail to provide them with credit (they can manage somehow even if their income drops), debt is a way of life and all debt comes upon us for a reason and should be taken seriously and dealt with quickly before lives are ruined.
5. Finally, propose a plan of action that shows debt is the number priority in the household now - not who buys what or who has control of money decisions or whatever it was that got debt in the first place! Then implement it quickly.
In conclusion debt is debt. And debt affects everyone to one degree or another - even those that don't have debt are affected by debt. So coming clean about debt is an important first step towards dealing with it if you want to live a debt free life, there really can be no other way out of debt that will work for everybody except working together as a team!
